Origami Math Genius (OMG) is a curriculum of origami math developed by BiJian Fan to integrate art and math in K-12 education. It is to turn every student into an OMG!
Origami math originated from the art of paper folding, it is a subset of mathematics that describes the governing laws of paper folding. A folding diagram in Figure 1 illustrates the mathematics in origami, from simple concepts such as geometry and fraction to more complicated concepts like spatial visualization and computer aided design. Origami has been used to create contemporary art, solve design problems in airbag, stent, robot, satellite, and many other fields. Teaching math through origami has been found more effective than traditional teaching.
OMG brings fun and hands-on activities into learning. Students can learn mathematical concept and logic in creating origami artworks, cultivate imagination and creativity, develop reasoning and problem-solving skill. BiJian utilizes OMG to excite children, help them to overcome math anxiety, and stimulates their intellectual curiosity. Thanks to grants from Smith-Hobson Foundation, Edison International, E.P. Foster Library, Oxnard Public Library, and Skillball Cultural Center, OMG has been brought to students and teachers in local community. It has also been reported in local newspaper, Ventura County Star.
