Camarillo public library hosted a train-the-trainers workshop on Origami Math Genius (OMG) for its Teen Advisory Board on April 16, 2016. Teenagers learned OMG projects and prepared themselves to teach other youngsters in the coming months at the library.
OMG is an inquiry based curriculum developed for integrating origami art and math in K-12 education. It engages students in relevant origami applications and develops their mathematical skills. Teaching math through origami is more effective than traditional teaching. OMG has been taught to students and teachers throughout Ventura county. More information on OMG can be found at http://www.bijian.com/omg.html Teenagers folded a piece of copy paper into various geometric shapes and built towers and honeycomb collectively. They also derived honeycomb’s dimensions mathematically and tested its structural strength by piling up books on top of it. Through creative play, they gained problem-solving skill and confidence to teach other youngsters.
