Artist BiJian Fan will lead a discussion of evolving relationship between science and art, art advanced by science, and science established based on art. An example of scientific art, Test the Water, is illustrated above. Thanks to material science, two seemingly incompatible media, paper and water, are combined to create a thought-provoking art of paper on water. It challenges conventional perception of paper visually and educates public about paper technology.
STEAM is a fast growing movement to integrate Art with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education, STEM+Art=STEAM. A new course, Science and Art Integration, will be offered in 2015 winter term at CSU Channel Islands’ Extended University.

Channel Islands National Park (CINP) commissioned local artist BiJian Fan to create artistic representation of endemic animals on the islands. The artworks will be installed at the park’s visitor center to engage public in preserving the Channel Islands through education. A maquette of island scrub jay shown above illustrates the unique bird only on Santa Cruz Island in CINP. It is the only island endemic bird species in North America.
