Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) was a Dutch master in painting. His photo-realistic techniques before photography era have long been a source of debate. Recent research articles, books, and movies have shed light on Vermeer’s use of optical aid in his painting.
How did Vermeer paint ? Was his use of optics ingenious or cheating? Those questions will be addressed in a new course, Science and Art Integration, at CSU Channel Islands’ Extended University. Artist BiJian Fan will lead a discussion on the evolving relationship between science and art, art advanced by science, and science established based on art. The class will be offered in winter 2015.
