U.S. math education ranks at the 31st internationally. Two thirds California students are not proficient in math. When a large share of the population lacks basic skills, a country's long-term economic growth is severely compromised.
Origami art improves math education, its advantage in math education has been established in numerous studies. It raises math achievement and cultivates creativity. To facilitate teaching math through origami art, an eTextbook - Origami Math Genius (OMG) has been published. Volume 1 and 2 are designated for elementary and middle schools respectively, they are available at BiJian.com/omg. An origami box exemplifies the conceptual learning. Students fold and unfold a box, deduce its length, width, and height from the paper size, and calculate its volume.
Thanks to grants from Edison International, Skirball Culture Center, and other funding agencies, OMG program has been brought to teachers and students in California since 2013.
